Detailed Day Trip information

View from the Leucate spring migration spot

Spring migration & summer visitors Leucate - Friday 29th March 2019

If the wind is NW we will check out the monitoring site at Leucate where hundreds and sometimes thousands of birds can be seen in just one hour! Hirundines in the thousands (including Alpine Swift, and possibly Red-rumped Swallow) can be seen migrating north and various raptors too. After a coffee in La Franqui we'll have a walk around Les Coussoules where we might see Great spotted cuckoo and various warblers that stop over in the attractive bushes. Then we'll picnic on the sea-front before heading over to La Palme lagoon looking for Greater flamingo, Slender billed gull, Avocet and Great white egreat, Black-winged stilt and Kentish plover. At the end of the day, if we have time, we will go up into the little hills above the salt-pans to look for Blue rock thrush, Sardinian and Dartford warbers, possibly Black-eared wheatear. We will also keep an eye out for larger soaring birds such as White stork, Black kite and Short-toed eagle.

Bird guide: Sébastien Roques

Meeting time and place will be confirmed nearer the day to those who register.

Open garrigue, botanical garden & stream valley around Feuilla (ENS programme) : Sunday 14th April 2019

Today's trip is part of a department-wide programme of about 150 natural history outings supported by the Aude county council and free to the public! During the course of the day we will visit three different areas around the village of Feuilla in the coastal Corbières: open garrigue (Dartford & Subalpine warbler, Tawny pipit, Black-eared wheatear...), an unusual botanical garden with cacti and agaves galore (Woodchat shrike, Corn bunting, Cirl bunting, Serin, Siskin...)  and a stream valley that is home to a whole host of different species (Golden oriole, Rock sparrow, Blue rock thrush, ...). We will be looking at birds, but also at reptiles and amphibians.
